Monday Makeovers — The Balancing Act of Fitness

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks 1 Comment

WooHoo — Week Two! I already feel energized and more rested throughout the entire day. Of course I may not be nearly this excited once weeks three and four hit, but for now, I’m happy to report some really great news in my efforts to transform my health.

Mentally: For me, clutter impacts my ability to think clearly. So part of my mental rennovation plan is to clear more clutter from my surroundings. I’m taking one room at a time, one corner at a time, and pacing myself through a total home makeover. I realize doing it this way will take weeks, but it also enables me to work on other responsibilities in my life, preventing me from getting further behind.

Emotionally: I’m revisiting some things I’ve known, but gotten lax about. One way to combat emotional issues is to communicate early, clearly, and often. This is

Are You Listening
Did You Hear What You Thought You Heard?

what I mean. Clarify what you think you heard someone say to you, instead of assuming you got their meaning. I missed this important aspect with my best friend the other day, and hurt her unnecessarily. I’m grateful we have the kind of friendship where we can talk about these things honestly, and show genuine remorse, instead of standing on a prideful piece of turf to fight for our rightness. Repeating back to someone what you think you heard them say is the best way I know to communicate early and clearly. But do this often. Don’t make my mistake, and slip into old assuming habits.

Spiritually: Some of you may groan when I say this, but I promise this works. Reading my Bible on a daily basis makes ALL the difference in whether the things I’m doing in my life work, or fail. God says it best when He says, “Seek my kingdom first, and all these things will be given to you.” If you aren’t going where He communicates — the Bible, you can’t know how to seek His Kingdom, and you won’t know what you’re missing out on.

Physically: On the physical front, I’m doing well. Since last Monday, I’ve participated in enough exercise to make me sweat, (lets me know my body is burning fat), at least five different days. Yes it’s a sacrifice of time, and other things I want or need to do. But, if I don’t get my physical body to a better place, in the not too distant future, I won’t be capable of doing those things anyway. I’m also tracking my food and drink intake through my Weight Watchers iPhone app. LOVE it!

I’m weighing myself once a week. and this morning’s scale reflected a 1.4 pound loss. Perfect for my age and lifestyle. If this were an average, which is a reasonable expectation, in approximately three months, I will be twenty pounds lighter. But, because muscle weighs more than fat, my clothes will be much looser, and my body tighter and toned. I can tell you this, I already feel better. Within three days of tracking my food, increasing my water intake, and exercising, I felt more rested and energized throughout the entire day. I’m getting more done, even with the sacrifice of thirty minutes to an hour of exercise time most days.

The balancing act of fitness means staying attuned to my mind, spirit, and emotions, as well as making physical changes. But it’s more than knowing, it’s doing something in all of these areas.

Next week I’ll share some of my personal exercise secrets. I can assure you, I don’t follow the same boring routine every day. I’m taking a fresh start approach with fresh faith. My life is already changing for the better.

Are you making any fresh faith changes? Have you seen early results in health initiatives?
