Not all rivers flow the same. Paddling enraged gorges that thrash with gallons of pressurized water requires different equipment than a placid stream gurgling over smooth stones. And making sure you stow the proper gear in your boat can mean the difference between a pleasant or unpleasant experience.
Sometimes a particular work day calls for full protective gear just to survive the adrenalin rush from crisis situations. Other days, it’s enough to float the current with an occasional stroke to keep you on course. However, get the resources backwards for current conditions, and things get rocky in a hurry.
Can you imagine tackling white water rapids with no life jacket? Would you consider navigating house-sized boulders without mapping out the danger zones?
Why would you cover your ears with a helmet and drown out the serenade of birds on a relaxing stretch of river? Would it make sense to over-paddle rivulets of water when they already submit to the gentle tug of downstream flows?
Neither should you push too hard when your work climate is flowing smoothly. And it isn’t smart to think rough waters will simply carry you without a crash.
So evaluate every day on the job uniquely, and be prepared to make a quick course change if necessary. New terrain waits around the bend. An adaptable attitude matched to a practical plan will make sure you not only reach the end of your journey safely, but that you enjoy the ride along the way.
What gear makes your job flow better? Do you thrive on excitement or prefer a quieter ride?
