End the Hurt

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks Leave a Comment

Sandy battled her thoughts. The company can afford it. No one will know, and if I tell it will only create turmoil. Why get the boss stirred up and risk him biting everyone else’s head off?

But deep in her soul, Sandy knew justification wouldn’t improve anything, but would probably make things worse. She wiped the slick of perspiration off her forehead, took three slow, deep breaths with ten counts of exhalation, and headed out the door. It was time for the next action step.

The E in Teshuvah represents action to end the hurt. It starts with confession and holding yourself accountable. Laying aside all justification to face your mistake with a decision to turn away from the behavior that started it all.

In Sandy’s case, she needed to gather courage and head to her boss’s office and confess her error. She needed to end the cover-up. It was a risk, but a necessary one, otherwise the guilt would keep her paralyzed and unable to function at a productive level.

With fear thumping through her muscles and nerves tingling her skin, Sandy approached her boss’s office. She didn’t know what waited on the other side, he would either appreciate her honesty or chomp her into emotional bits. Anxiety choked her throat while she tapped the door.

Have you ever done something wrong and hidden the offense, intentionally or unintentionally? How did it make you feel? Does the memory pop unexpectedly into your mind on occasion? Have you dealt with something difficult and experienced the relief of confession?

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?
