When Life Has a Different Plan

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks Leave a Comment

I’m not quite sure where to begin. You know those periods of life where you have a plan, but then life seems to have an entirely different one? Yeah, that just happened.

When I left you last, I had just come off of a heavy six week travel schedule and jumped immediately into last minute wedding prep for my oldest son. Then, disaster…

A couple of days before his marriage, my son’s back went out. It was so bad, he could barely stand through the ceremony with his new bride. As a mom, my heart cracked when streams of sweat poured off his face and tremors racked his body, as he struggled to stay on his feet. He was hunched over like a 100-year-old man.

Job 38:1 The Lord SpokeWhat a horrible way to start such an important new chapter of your life — it seemed unfair. After the wedding, while my sweet daughter-in-love worked, my son needed someone to sit with him. This required strategic scheduling for various family members to spend the day. Watching my grown child grimace at the tiniest move added to the emotional weight I carried.

We prayed and prayed for his relief, however, as I’ve known for years, God’s timing isn’t mine. Faith isn’t about getting what you want, faith is about trusting even when you don’t. As the weeks wore on, our concerns raised. A month in, after multiple medical visits and attempts at treatment, no improvement. And the word surgery entered the conversation. But we barely had time to register the possibility before life tossed another curve ball our direction.

It was a Friday morning. Through a groggy mind, I realized I heard my husband in the shower. This may not be unusual for some, but in our household, I’m the morning bather, while he showers at night. But tired as I was, I drifted back to sleep. It didn’t take long for him to wake me up again, this time alarmed.

I heard my honey groan and say, “This is stupid.”

“Are you all right?” I half-heartedly asked.

“Not really. My chest hurts.”

I leaned up on an elbow as my pulse speeded up. “What do you mean your chest hurts? Are you having sharp pains? Do you feel anything in either of your arms?”

“I don’t know. I mean, it’s like there’s pressure, but every once in a while I feel a sharper pain. And my left arm hurts. I probably pulled something when I was carrying my boat batteries yesterday. Do we have any aspirin?”

“Yes!” I ran to the kitchen and grabbed three baby aspirin out of the cabinet so he could chew and swallow them. “We’re going to the hospital.”

When he didn’t argue, I knew something was seriously wrong.

At the hospital, though his EKG came back normal, his blood work did not. His heart enzymes were extremely high. We were quickly sent to a larger facility in St. Louis and during a heart cath, the cardiologist discovered one are of an artery with 95% blockage, with 40% in another. The heart muscle was damaged, but thankfully, only moderately so. According to the medical team, those three baby aspirin may have kept his heart attack from mushrooming into a major or even fatal event.

Two days later, he was home recovering, so I prepared to get back into the routine of helping sit with our son while I worked around it. Until the next thing happened.

My eye disease flared up not once, but twice in two weeks. Though I was fighting it, discouragement began to gain ground.

At my lowest point, I questioned whether I could or should continue pursuing the writing and speaking career I loved — and felt called to. But God stepped in with a surprising encouragement.

My phone rang and a voice on the other end identified herself as a woman who had heard me speak during my crazy busy travel weeks. Then she gushed, “I had to call and tell you that I just finished reading Getting Through What You Can’t Get Over, and it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. I feel like I was supposed to thank you for using your talents to help other people.”

Since the beginning of the year, a lot has happened. But as I’d learned in the past, I chose to trust God while my emotions ran haywire. I do not regret that decision. He came through, as He always ultimately does.

  • My son had his surgery last week, and though his recovery won’t come overnight, we already see dramatic improvements.
  • My husband is doing great.
  • And my eyes are back to normal.

Fresh Starts PodcastSomeone recently asked me if I would still praise God if things had turned out differently. I have to say, “Yes.”

I would grieve. Life would grind to a temporary halt. But I would still refuse my feelings the opportunity to supercede my faith.

Life may blindside me, and some of those events may cause delays, but I refuse to allow them to defeat me. I will continue to tell myself and others, “It’s never too late for a fresh start with fresh faith.”

Is Your Life Satisfying You?

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks Leave a Comment

One Word Cloud
Is Your LIfe Satisfying You?

I love what I do. But as I travel across America, and sometimes outside our great nation’s borders, I meet few people who can say the same. It saddens me to know so many people are unfulfilled. But unfulfillment comes in many forms — sometimes it isn’t about what we do, but about who we are.

When asked the question, “Is your life satisfying you?” many would answer with a sad, “No!”

In the capacity of a Certified Personality Trainer, I recently spoke to a group of professional women and men about human personality, not only training them about their wiring, but providing an overview of how they could use the information to improve their lives. Within two weeks, I received an email from one of the men in attendance — one I’m unhappy to report — that is all too familiar.

You see, there are many people who know how to succeed professionally, but personally, in the privacy of their behind-closed-doors life, things are a bit of a mess. I know there are many, because I’ve met several over the years in my role of an inspirational business/life coach. Their financial bottom line is solid, while their relational, emotional, physical, or spiritual bottom line is in the red.

When your life is out of balance, no matter what area is out of kilter, your quality of living is disrupted, making a person feel unfulfilled — and sometimes downright miserable. It’s because of this, that I focus on improving your quality of life in seven key areas, I call them life’s power points. If one of these crucial power points is out of order, we are out of order. A balanced life requires that we give them consistent attention, otherwise misery creeps in.

Unlocking Excellence
Are You Unlocking an Excellent Future?

So I ask you, how do your power points fare? Are you strong in all of these areas?

  • Intellectual
  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual
  • Relational
  • Professional
  • Financial

I too must challenge myself to stay in balance. After honestly assessing myself, sometimes I must dig in and do some hard work — but the results always make me glad I did. After identifying an area that needs work, I ask myself a series of questions that help me reset.Keys to Success

  • Have I set goals, written them down, holding myself accountable with a date stamp deadline?
  • Have I clearly defined the why behind what I want to accomplish?
  • What is the next best step I should take to improve my situation?

Focusing on these seven key areas are the starting points that can launch anyone out of misery and propel them to success. I am blessed to say I love what I do, but I also love my life. It isn’t perfect — but it is fulfilled.

If you can’t say the same about your own life, then I urge you to tune in next week, when we begin unlayering your abundant purpose. Over a several week period, I want to help you live out all you were made to be.

#yourabundantpurpose

Are you enjoying a great quality of life? If not, what’s out of order that is causing you discomfort?

Proverbs 3:18 (NLT)

Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly.

5 Lessons from Highly Effective Leaders

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks Leave a Comment

Moving Where You Want to BeI’m in my fourth state in five weeks as I write this, Kentucky currently. And I just finished facilitating/speaking at back to back leadership retreats — both for the hospitality/resort/recreation industry. But no matter what type of business, organization, association, or other group I speak to, I always come away reminded of one thing…

Human beings are human beings. No matter what their title, position, financial status, or any masks they may wear. People across culture and political affiliation still care about similar things and the decisions they make still create predictable outcomes — good or bad. My ultimate takeaway?

Human beings are absolutely worth investing in.

By the facial expressions, body language, engagement, and occasional tears of the groups I speak to, it seems I’m not alone in my opinion. Grown women and men courageously cry when they care.

In preparation for the groups I just met with, I culled information from my years of experience as a leader and business coach to come up with what I called, Five Lessons from Highly Effective Leaders. But as I thought about it, I realized most of the leadership tips on this one sheet apply to anyone who wants to experience deeper happiness and an enhanced quality of life. We all lead someone, the question is, are we leading well?

Every person, including you, needs a reason to get out of bed each day: a purpose, positive plans, power to make a difference. If you lead no one else, to live a life of true happiness, at the very least you should lead yourself.

Book Review: Words That Change Everything

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks 1 Comment

Karen Jordan AuthorEvery one once in awhile you come across a string of words that change your thinking, and as a result, change your life. This happened to me when I read Karen Jordan’s book, Words That Change Everything. As you can guess, in my estimation her content stays true to its title.

Besides Jordan’s vulnerability in telling some of her personal stories, something I’m fond of doing in my own writing, I really like her funny moments and practical tips. Her R.E.S.T. acronym is one that particularly stuck with me.

But as much as I appreciate this book cover to cover, it was the final chapter that sealed my passionate praise for Jordan’s debut launch. I don’t want to spoil the surprise for you, but I do want to offer enough to intrigue you to read it for yourself. It’s that good.

Using a boating analogy, Karen Jordan asks a series of thought-provoking questions that I’ll share with you momentarily. But take my word for it, you’ll want to read the basis for these queries in the book. The first time I swam in the wise waters of this chapter, I was in the throes of a dark and stormy season. Words That Change Everything, provided a safety ring for me to cling to.

As I neared the end of the book, these questions stirred my thoughts, encouraged my spirit, and strengthened my mind:

  1. Words That Change EverythingWhat are our anchors? What things in our lives do we need ot release that we think are holding us steady? Jobs, money, relationships?
  2. What are our rudders? What things do we insist on doing to guide us that we need to let go of? Plans, dreams, methods, opinions? (This reminds me of the Let Go List post I wrote a couple of weeks ago.)
  3. How can we lift our sails? Are we willing to let the Holy Spirit guide us, even when it seems we are traveling into difficult waters?
  4. Where are we going, and who are our witnesses? Who will be saved in spite of the dangers the future holds?

Books entertain, teach, motivate, and some, like Words That Change Everything, especially inspire. I’m better for having read this non-fiction manuscript. If you choose to read it, I trust you will say the same is true for you.

Have you read Words That Change Everything? What recent books have transformed your thoughts?

Fulfilled in What You Do

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks Leave a Comment

I’m on a whirlwind travel schedule as I write this. Five states in seven weeks. Crazy, I know.

So why do I put myself through this? Especially since the income is inconsistent, the investment costs are high, and tomorrow’s work is not guaranteed.

Because speaking and writing, not for personal gain, but because of the satisfaction I feel from helping others, is a benefit like no other. These past few years I’ve discovered why I was wired the way that I am, why my unique DNA mix matters in such a positive way, and how to finally live in my purpose. It’s difficult, audacious, and exhilerating.

But now that I’ve discovered this, one thing still makes me extremely sad. How few people are truly living alive — like I once was. The more I travel and speak, the more women and men I meet who are still hunting for that thing that makes them want to jump out of bed in the morning. Most confess to barely making it through the day. Some are looking for exhileration in all the wrong places. Many are dealing with consequences from decisions made in desperate attempts to feel better. This is not what we were created for.

The Why Behind the WhatOne of the lessons I’ve learned through my own journey is the power of accepting the dare. Choosing to believe your dreams might be possible — even if only by a whisper-thin thread. Faith in action, by making one daily decision at a time that moves you closer to discovering and then living in, that special something you were created to do. Daring to trust that the gutteral moan inside your soul, telling you there is something more yet to be discovered, is the truth.

It takes awhile to figure out what your special purpose is, but I fully believe that each person is made with one wired inside of them. I’ve found that most of our gifts are so natural to us, we don’t consider them as part of a greater plan. And it is in that very discounting where so many evade the tug, ignore the call, and miss the greater plan for their lives.

Comparing abilities with someone else’s talent is another mistake many people make. Because if you look long enough, you will find someone against whom you don’t measure up. So if you are struggling with your purpose, your destiny, or your life plan, then take heart.

  • Dare StatementsMy first suggestion is to listen to your soul’s whispers.
  • Then consider those things you do that others compliment you for, but you think are no big deal.
  • If your dream seems bigger than possibility, dare to believe God, who is in the business of making the impossible possible. Just be prepared for his own creative ways — how he makes dreams come true can differ from our expectations.
  • Look in the mirror and tell the person you see that you believe in them. Encourage them. Give them a reason to keep going.
  • Resolve to tenacious actions. Do not give up. Every day, do something intentional toward reaching your goals. Learn. Practice. Connect. Rest.
  • Allow yourself to feel fulfilled in what you do. Every day, in some task, in some way.

It is a great gift to know what you are made to do, and then to experience the living of it while there is still breath in your body. Don’t settle for less — go for your best.

What more were you made for?
