Are We Helpless in a Weak Job Market?

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks 2 Comments

This past week, a friend said to me, “I don’t know what to do about the job situation, it’s really bad. I guess we’re just helpless.”

But as much as I love her, I can’t agree. We are not helpless.

We are a nation built on the foundation of our faith in God. So why don’t we stand on it?

Recently, I started reading the Bible from front to back again. So often, things looked helpless for the people of God. Many times they brought consequences on themselves, leading to famine and poverty. And yet, when they cried out to Him in humility, from their bleak conditions, He showered them with mercy and provision.

As a Christian nation, we are not powerless against the ravages of past sin. Our culture swirls in a vortex of pride, greed, laziness, gluttony, and waste. Black clouds and economic storms threaten to capsize any security we thought we had. But we should not fear, or allow discouragement to drive us to despair.

We can’t fix this on our own, no matter what slick politicians tell us, but there is an answer. And it lies in a three step formula of submission:

1) Confess mistakes. This is between you and God, but openly admit any problems to Him. We’ve all sinned and fallen short of His glory. So whether one, all, or different sins from those listed above plague you, freedom begins when you admit them.

2) Turn away, or repent from past mistakes. Demonstrate your resolve through new actions.

3) Accept Christ’s offer of forgiveness. Do not continue to live like a defeated person paying penance for the past. Once you’ve turned from negative habits, stand up and behave like the free person you are. Do not be afraid or discouraged, ask Christ for help with your problems. He loves to shine His power in our weakness.

These may seem simple, and you might wonder what this has to do with being out of work. But often the simplest answers are right in front of us, and the hardest steps to take. Trust is a tough word to live, but belief in Christ offers peace, and His power provides job security.

Do you think there’s hope for our economy? Have you taken your financial concerns to Christ consistently and fervently?

Mark 4:39 (NIV)
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

Wonderful posting, as usual! Good reminder that although we may not be (arguably) a Christian nation” anymore, we are Christians in our hearts, minds and deeds…that alone is reason to be hopeful, happy and trusting….especially when facing the job situation. Thanks Anita!

I’ve recently been reminded that I fail to call on the power of God. Why do I presume I’m powerless when He controls the universe?

Thanks Deb, and praying the favor of the Lord shines upon you!
