Work should be about more than making money, more than feeling good about yourself, and more than powering mindlessly through your life.
Work should make a difference beyond yourself — at least if it’s meaningful work. But how do you bridge from the meaningless, to work that touches others in positive ways?
First, look for ways you can identify meaningful work exactly where you are now. Offer a helping hand, a listening ear, or maybe even an appropriate hug. (If the other person is open to that kind of physical interaction).
Second, look just beyond the scope of your immediate influence. Be willing to expand a compassionate heart to help others you interact with through a current work environment. Set an example of genuine integrity, doing the same thing whether someone can see you or not.
Third, and maybe the hardest. If you absolutely cannot bridge to greater heights where you work now, and you can’t do things that move you beyond selfish means, then maybe a permanent move is in order.
I’m not telling you to make a rash decision, I’m not advising you to jeopardize your family’s welfare, but I am telling you to make prayerful consideration. Seek God and ask Him if this is where you are supposed to be. Then listen.
Intently.
You won’t have to guess if He tells you to move. The answer will be clear. Do not progress unless you know you have the go-ahead. But neither should you stay if He’s telling you to cross a bridge into greater heights.
Work isn’t all about you — it’s about making a difference, right where you are. Do you have opportunities to make the world a better place through your work?
