I write a lot about consulting God, gathering facts, and protecting ourselves from emotional decisions. And yet, I nearly disregarded my own advice to reach a disastrous assumption today.
A situation was presented to me that made it appear as if an employee had done something wrong. Terribly wrong. My old self would have immediately taken the information and ran with it. I would have called the employee and accused them, based on the evidence I received, of acting inappropriately. I might have even fired them over it.
However, even though my emotions were still running rampant, I chose a different course.
I vented to a very trusted person, took a deep breath, starting a fact gathering mission, and discovered a surprise. Even when I was encouraged to call the employee, I held back and said, “No. I’m going to consult God about this. I need to pray, let the situation sit overnight, and decide from there.”
Am I glad I did.
Within an hour, another piece of the information puzzle came to light. I had forgotten about authorizing something in December that set a series of automatic events into motion. My employee should have paid more attention, but that is the extent of her wrongdoing. Otherwise, she is completely innocent of what the original facts seemed to say.
So lesson learned. When challenges arise, make sure you locate all of the pieces of the information puzzle. You might see something you overlooked before. And often, you’ll be glad you did. I know I was.
