Anita’s Thyroid Protocol

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks Leave a Comment

This is a different kind of post, based on numerous requests for me to share my thyroid protocol. Whether you are experiencing any major health issues or not, if you want a healthier, happier you in 2018, then you might consider this program.
***Though my thyroid protocol is all natural, I strongly suggest you talk to your doctor about any dietary changes or supplements before incorporating them. I am not a physician and am not dispensing medical advice. I am simply sharing what worked for me. Now, to the program…

Thyroid Healing ProtocolSo with my heavy work load over the past several weeks, I’ve not followed up on a promise. I failed to give you the core information on my thyroid protocol. For 90 days I followed this program stringently, lost almost thirty pounds, felt great, and my thyroid numbers improved drastically. (See the basic outline of the first thirty days in my process to your right or access it here: Anita’s Thyroid Nutritional Protocol Month 1 PDF.)
My research also led me to several articles touting the advantages of this kind of nutritional lifestyle for improving the heart, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and other inflammatory diseases, especially when turmeric is involved. These are not my claims, I’m just sharing those of others. Google any of the items on my outline, and you’ll find supporting articles from studies and experts. I did this for my health, but shedding several excess pounds the natural way was a nice side-benefit.

Thyroid Healing ProtocolSome of what I’m sharing came from these books: The Hashimoto Protocol, written by Izabella Wentz, FASCP, The Thyroid Adrenal Revolution by Aviva Romm, M.D., and What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hypothyroidism by Ken Blanchard, M.D., P.h.D. with Marietta Abrams Brill. But I mixed in other well-researched data as well, to find what worked for me.

After my initial 90 days, I took a couple of weeks off. I wasn’t horrible in my eating (most of the time) but I can tell you, the difference in letting my guard down was marked. I think my main triggers are gluten, soy, and sugar. (Each time I ingested any of these three, I felt the difference within minutes, sometimes seconds.)
Thyroid Healing ProtocolBy paying close attention to the signals from my body, I also found that dairy doesn’t seem to be an issue, while caffeine and alcohol play a very minor role in my every day diet. But I do know I need to monitor and limit these as well.
After testing this in my own life, not only am I a believer, but my doctor is now a believer, too. This program worked for me! When I follow this thyroid protocol, I am healthier and stronger — I feel alive again.
So I’ve climbed back on the bandwagon — no food is worth losing the energy, strength, and clarity I gained when removing triggering foods and adding naturally healing replacements. Plus, I don’t want my clothes getting tighter again.
I have a publishing deadline for my fifth book on March 1st, so I must delay something else I’d like to share with you. Hopefully, I’ll be able to offer an eBook with recipes, things I added in the second and third months of my personal protocol, along with other tips, the week I hit send on my manuscript. In the meantime, I pray 2018 brings you greater peace, health, joy, and prosperity. Don’t forget — it’s never too late for a fresh start with fresh faith!

Why On Earth Do I Exist?

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks Leave a Comment

God wired a need for purpose into the human condition, and there is nothing more frustrating than to feel as if you are stuck or stumbling mindlessly through life. I met with two different friends recently, and as happens most of the time, purpose came up in the conversations.

One friend began to cry when she described how lethargic she felt, and expressed her concern that she had no idea what she was supposed to do with her life.
  • Was she already fulfilling it and just blind to see the purpose?
  • Was she missing a greater plan?
  • Was she supposed to make a move, but allowing the fear of the unknown to hold her back?
  • Wasn’t she supposed to have some special talent or ability? Because she didn’t think she did.
  • Did she have to do something big and great in the eyes of the world for her life to have meaning?
  • Did she even have a call to fulfill a higher purpose?
  • How could someone like her make any kind of a difference? Especially feeling like she did and in the state she was in.
These are common concerns, and ones I’m exploring answers to, as I write my new book, Exceedingly: Stories, Skills, and Strategies for Unearthing Your Abundant Purpose.

I know what it feels like to lack a sense of meaning and fulfillment — but conversely, I know what it feels like to unearth your purpose, and begin to live according to God’s greater plan. I’ll take door #2 every time. It may not look like it now, but I’m personally familiar with the questions raised above, because I’ve asked them plenty of times about my own life.
We are all wired to make a difference. Some are made to do big, splashy, public things, while others often discount their impact, because their talents come in smaller, private, unrecognized ways.
Whether it’s offering a smile to a sad person, giving anonymously to someone in need, picking up the phone to talk with an old friend or acquaintance, delivering a meal to a hungry person, sending a note or card in the mail, or falling on your knees to lift another human being up, do not despise your purpose in every day life. Who knows, your small, secret, selfless act, may change another person’s outlook — in some cases, it could even save a life.
The statistics and evidence on how loneliness affects us are profound, and yet they hold the key to discovering our purpose. Why on earth do I exist? Why do you you exist?
When we give of ourselves, we give to ourselves — and we begin unlayering the reason we were created. We exist to help fill others, and as we do, we begin to realize our own emptiness is disappearing, too. We can get through anything, as long we can find a purpose to fulfill.
What do you do for other people, even acts so small you feel like they aren’t that important? How does it make you feel when you see the reactions of those on the receiving end of your kindness?

One Word Surprises

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks Leave a Comment

My One WordIf you follow me, you know how excited I get about my annual One Word focus. But I don’t choose my word, it’s actually chosen for me. How?

When I start seeing and hearing a particular word, I start paying closer attention and praying to see if it’s “the one”.  But even after God clearly reveals the word, I never truly understand the meaning behind the choice, until I can view the year in hindsight.

In late fall/early winter 2015, Rise kept crossing my path. I soon knew it was my 2016 word. I thought I knew what it meant, but a few months in, I realized I was going to have to rise above some really tough situations. And things were already rough, as we struggled to protect one of our grandsons from things no child should endure.

I was in another Jobette season, where life knocks you down, but you struggle back to your knees, only to have another tsunami of crisis sweep your feet from beneath you. But no circumstance can keep you down when God is on your side. He may let you go through hard times, but He will not leave you alone or forsake you to deal with it by yourself.

In 2017, Reset became my One Word focus. It kept me clear and centered, so that no matter what we faced, (and true to pattern, it was a lot), day by day, step by step, choice by choice, and prayer by prayer, I began to climb out of the murky madness. Relationally, financially, emotionally, mentally, and physically, I mercifully made progress.

Though life isn’t perfect, and there’s much more work to be done, I’m getting there. And one of the areas I’m most excited about is my health.

When Reset was unveiled, I had no idea I would need a complete health overhaul. It was another example of One Word surprises — something I’m now accustomed to. But life’s an adventure, right?

In April, I saw a doctor about the lump on my neck. I’d read and researched enough to feel confident it was my swollen thyroid, and the physician confirmed. He ordered an ultrasound. But only three days later, my husband had an early morning heart attack.

Thankfully, I was home and not speaking in another state, so at my insistence, my stubborn man went to the hospital. When he didn’t argue, I knew it was serious. Sure enough, the first hospital referred him to another, where they discovered both 95% and 40% blockages in his arteries. Stents, great surgeons, and a greater God saved him. But of course, this meant my health issues were put on hold.

When I finally saw my doctor again, a few months later, I had read a couple of interesting books and wanted to try a completely natural treatment, versus jumping into man-made chemicals. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for modern medicine, but sometimes I think we grab for easy pills, instead of at least trying to work with God’s built-in healing mechanisms.

So for both my body’s sake and financial reasons, with my doctor’s approval, I chose to try a natural thyroid protocol. I based it on hours of research, and the core foundation of a book titled, Hashimoto’s Protocol, by Izabella Wentz. For almost 90 days, I’ve stringently watched what entered my body, and protected it fiercely from outside stressors and physical pressures. (This is day 80.) I’m thrilled to report it worked.

I’ve run out of room today, but be assured and stay tuned, because I will talk about this in more detail very soon. And I will offer you specifics regarding what I’ve done to reset my body’s internal thermometer, plus I’ll share some health results. I’m not a physician or pharmacist, so I am not suggesting treatment for anyone else, only sharing what worked for me. If you’re interested in trying this for yourself, see your doctor, and make medically informed decisions.

This year, my One Word once again surprised me, but this time, in a very exciting way. I don’t despise the tough times, because every challenge, as well as every celebration, teaches me something. And when I’m open and listening to it, everything I experience, helps shape my abundant purpose for breathing on this planet.

Do you do a One Word focus? If so, what is your current One Word?

When Life Has a Different Plan

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks Leave a Comment

I’m not quite sure where to begin. You know those periods of life where you have a plan, but then life seems to have an entirely different one? Yeah, that just happened.

When I left you last, I had just come off of a heavy six week travel schedule and jumped immediately into last minute wedding prep for my oldest son. Then, disaster…

A couple of days before his marriage, my son’s back went out. It was so bad, he could barely stand through the ceremony with his new bride. As a mom, my heart cracked when streams of sweat poured off his face and tremors racked his body, as he struggled to stay on his feet. He was hunched over like a 100-year-old man.

Job 38:1 The Lord SpokeWhat a horrible way to start such an important new chapter of your life — it seemed unfair. After the wedding, while my sweet daughter-in-love worked, my son needed someone to sit with him. This required strategic scheduling for various family members to spend the day. Watching my grown child grimace at the tiniest move added to the emotional weight I carried.

We prayed and prayed for his relief, however, as I’ve known for years, God’s timing isn’t mine. Faith isn’t about getting what you want, faith is about trusting even when you don’t. As the weeks wore on, our concerns raised. A month in, after multiple medical visits and attempts at treatment, no improvement. And the word surgery entered the conversation. But we barely had time to register the possibility before life tossed another curve ball our direction.

It was a Friday morning. Through a groggy mind, I realized I heard my husband in the shower. This may not be unusual for some, but in our household, I’m the morning bather, while he showers at night. But tired as I was, I drifted back to sleep. It didn’t take long for him to wake me up again, this time alarmed.

I heard my honey groan and say, “This is stupid.”

“Are you all right?” I half-heartedly asked.

“Not really. My chest hurts.”

I leaned up on an elbow as my pulse speeded up. “What do you mean your chest hurts? Are you having sharp pains? Do you feel anything in either of your arms?”

“I don’t know. I mean, it’s like there’s pressure, but every once in a while I feel a sharper pain. And my left arm hurts. I probably pulled something when I was carrying my boat batteries yesterday. Do we have any aspirin?”

“Yes!” I ran to the kitchen and grabbed three baby aspirin out of the cabinet so he could chew and swallow them. “We’re going to the hospital.”

When he didn’t argue, I knew something was seriously wrong.

At the hospital, though his EKG came back normal, his blood work did not. His heart enzymes were extremely high. We were quickly sent to a larger facility in St. Louis and during a heart cath, the cardiologist discovered one are of an artery with 95% blockage, with 40% in another. The heart muscle was damaged, but thankfully, only moderately so. According to the medical team, those three baby aspirin may have kept his heart attack from mushrooming into a major or even fatal event.

Two days later, he was home recovering, so I prepared to get back into the routine of helping sit with our son while I worked around it. Until the next thing happened.

My eye disease flared up not once, but twice in two weeks. Though I was fighting it, discouragement began to gain ground.

At my lowest point, I questioned whether I could or should continue pursuing the writing and speaking career I loved — and felt called to. But God stepped in with a surprising encouragement.

My phone rang and a voice on the other end identified herself as a woman who had heard me speak during my crazy busy travel weeks. Then she gushed, “I had to call and tell you that I just finished reading Getting Through What You Can’t Get Over, and it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. I feel like I was supposed to thank you for using your talents to help other people.”

Since the beginning of the year, a lot has happened. But as I’d learned in the past, I chose to trust God while my emotions ran haywire. I do not regret that decision. He came through, as He always ultimately does.

  • My son had his surgery last week, and though his recovery won’t come overnight, we already see dramatic improvements.
  • My husband is doing great.
  • And my eyes are back to normal.

Fresh Starts PodcastSomeone recently asked me if I would still praise God if things had turned out differently. I have to say, “Yes.”

I would grieve. Life would grind to a temporary halt. But I would still refuse my feelings the opportunity to supercede my faith.

Life may blindside me, and some of those events may cause delays, but I refuse to allow them to defeat me. I will continue to tell myself and others, “It’s never too late for a fresh start with fresh faith.”

Is Your Life Satisfying You?

Written by Anita Agers-Brooks Leave a Comment

One Word Cloud
Is Your LIfe Satisfying You?

I love what I do. But as I travel across America, and sometimes outside our great nation’s borders, I meet few people who can say the same. It saddens me to know so many people are unfulfilled. But unfulfillment comes in many forms — sometimes it isn’t about what we do, but about who we are.

When asked the question, “Is your life satisfying you?” many would answer with a sad, “No!”

In the capacity of a Certified Personality Trainer, I recently spoke to a group of professional women and men about human personality, not only training them about their wiring, but providing an overview of how they could use the information to improve their lives. Within two weeks, I received an email from one of the men in attendance — one I’m unhappy to report — that is all too familiar.

You see, there are many people who know how to succeed professionally, but personally, in the privacy of their behind-closed-doors life, things are a bit of a mess. I know there are many, because I’ve met several over the years in my role of an inspirational business/life coach. Their financial bottom line is solid, while their relational, emotional, physical, or spiritual bottom line is in the red.

When your life is out of balance, no matter what area is out of kilter, your quality of living is disrupted, making a person feel unfulfilled — and sometimes downright miserable. It’s because of this, that I focus on improving your quality of life in seven key areas, I call them life’s power points. If one of these crucial power points is out of order, we are out of order. A balanced life requires that we give them consistent attention, otherwise misery creeps in.

Unlocking Excellence
Are You Unlocking an Excellent Future?

So I ask you, how do your power points fare? Are you strong in all of these areas?

  • Intellectual
  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual
  • Relational
  • Professional
  • Financial

I too must challenge myself to stay in balance. After honestly assessing myself, sometimes I must dig in and do some hard work — but the results always make me glad I did. After identifying an area that needs work, I ask myself a series of questions that help me reset.Keys to Success

  • Have I set goals, written them down, holding myself accountable with a date stamp deadline?
  • Have I clearly defined the why behind what I want to accomplish?
  • What is the next best step I should take to improve my situation?

Focusing on these seven key areas are the starting points that can launch anyone out of misery and propel them to success. I am blessed to say I love what I do, but I also love my life. It isn’t perfect — but it is fulfilled.

If you can’t say the same about your own life, then I urge you to tune in next week, when we begin unlayering your abundant purpose. Over a several week period, I want to help you live out all you were made to be.

#yourabundantpurpose

Are you enjoying a great quality of life? If not, what’s out of order that is causing you discomfort?

Proverbs 3:18 (NLT)

Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly.
